At 7 DAYS OLD- The largest one was the sable female with the light green string. She weighed 1.12.3 and the smallest is the female sable with the pink string at 1.4.0

colored collars help to recognize puppies that all look alike

Coat color at this age is unpredictable, they can change as they get older. It looks like we have 3 blacks, 7 black sables and 1 wolf sable.

Good pigment should be sought after but many factors such as health and temperament should always be much more important than coat color. Coat color, in and of itself, should always be subordinate to structure, gait, type, and character and should never take precedence over the working abilities of the dog. Eye color should be dark and nose pigment should be black as well.

Concerning Genes

AGOUTI (SABLE) The basic body color of the German Shepherd is controlled by the genes. The order of German Shepherd coat colors dominance is as follows: golden sable, grey sable, saddle marked black and tan, bicolor* black and tan (bicolor is where the dog only has tan on the legs and face, not on the body), and black.

Additionally, know that the black gene is recessive to all the other colors in GSD's. The sable colors are dominant over all the other colors and patterns in the German Shepherd Dog breed

BLACK This gene controls the black pigment formation on the GSD, not the hair color. The German Shepherd coat colors order of dominance is exactly as follows: Black pigment including nose, eye rims and pads; Carrier for liver color; Liver color - brown black colors, brown nose, eye rims and pads.

Note: most GSDs are considered black pigment including nose, eye rims and pads.

REGARDING COAT

Short-coated German Shepherd's maintain a short coat, which lies close to the body. These dogs usually have less undercoat.

The Plush Coat German Shepherd has a medium length coat with a thick, fluffy undercoat. These dogs do not have any feathering as in the long coated GSD's.

The coated German Shepherd, also called Long coated German Shepherd's, have much longer fur around their ears, on the backs of their legs, chest and tail (feathering) than other German Shepherd's.

Phoenix has been bred to a beautifully dark pigmented DDR male out of Kistha Haus Kennels. JUST FAGEN VOM KISTHA HAUS “ROOKIE”, Rookie’s OFA’s Hips/Good and Elbows/Normal. Rookie passed his CERF eye exam and is DM-Clear. He weighs between 74 and 78lbs and tends to produce larger than his own size. We will expect puppies with medium to heavy bone. Stephanie recently sent in this photo of Jasper, his ears are up and he is all legs... clumsy and full of energy.

Angela recently sent in these photos of Dutch who's ears have also come up. Angela tells me she has Dutch in puppy training with a trainer, which is never a bad idea with a strong young dog.

Amy sent me these two photos of Diesel today. He is a handsome boy with slightly lighter eyes than his brothers.

THE RED COLLARED PUPPY WENT TO LIVE WITH STEPHANIE AND HER MOM, TERRY. His name is Jasper. Below are some of the comments they have sent me over the past few days.

"I wanted to let you know that Red Collar (he still has no name) is doing great! He had a good night - slept in his crate until about 5:00 a.m. before he made any noise. Steffi slept on the floor in front of the crate so he could see her (it was so cute). She took him out and he went pee, then went back in his crate and cried for a little while before he went back to sleep. She got up at 8:00 for work and took him out again - he went pee again outside. yea!"

"He is just the sweetest dog! You can just tell that he is going to be a good dog. He's friendly, happy, smart and so far pretty well behaved considering his age. I just love watching him play or sleep or do anything. It's kind of like having a new baby, except that he is more like a toddler. Will have to do some rearranging in the house. Forgot that puppies like to chew on everything within their reach. He has tons of toys and chewy things, but everything is new to him"

"You obviously did a great job raising and socializing the puppies. They all seem like they are going to make wonderful family pets. I'm looking forward to many years of fun with this dog - who needs a name soon. It's driving me crazy not to be able to call him something!!

THE BLUE COLLARED PUPPY WENT TO LIVE WITH CHRIS AND AMY AND THEIR 2 GIRLS. They named him Diesel. Below are some of the comments they have sent me in the past few days.

"Hi There ~

He's doing WONDERFUL!! We've been very busy playing with and enjoying him. He's honestly is the best behaved pup I've ever had. He hardly potty's in the house; he sleeps beside my bed on the floor waking me up when he needs to go potty; he's always wherever I am...a Mamma's boy for sure!

We are all already madly in love with him. He's such a sweetie. Thank you again! He's exactly what we were hoping for!!"

"Diesel is such a joy. He's lying here beside my desk as I work. As long as he knows I'm close, he's happy. He's definitely chosen me as his fave! LOL! He is sleeping in his crate beside our bed at night now. I thought he'd fight me on the crate, but he went right in and went to sleep. He will usually sleep from 11 p.m. until maybe 5 a.m. before he has to pee. He comes back in and goes back to bed! He's so cute! All our friends go on & on about how beautiful he is."

THE PURPLE COLLARED PUPPY WENT TO LIVE WITH BRIAN, ANGELA AND THEIR SON CADEN. They named him Dutch and called to tell me how his first night was.

They told me he slept in his crate with little trouble from about 10pm to about 4am and whimpered to be let out. He then went back into the crate and slept until their son woke up around 7:30. They will update me on his progress in their home and send photos in a few weeks.

All the puppies recieved their second worming, this week. They went to the vet and all have good bites, a clean bill of health and were microchipped.

The purple collared puppy in the above photos is available. He is very social and affectionate, he will begin his crate training and fundamental puppy obedience in the next few days.

5 Weeks old and only 2 left

We conducted a series of tests on the puppies to help assess their temperaments. This testing is commonly known as the Volhard test and we added a few things to the series that we think also helps with the determination. The day these photos were taken, the puppies were taken outside to the back and it was the first time they had been around the pool. The blue and the Green puppies managed to stay away but the purple and the red both got curious and learned about the edge. You will see some wet puppy photos here. This is all part of the learning process. It is good to let your puppy learn when you are nearby to be sure and help him out of the mess.

The Blue Puppy has tested mainly in the 2's and has shown that he will most likely be a good dog for a working dog home or a person with previous alpha dog experience. This dog will be very active and will need a lot of discipline. With that in mind, he is extremely intelligent and is a quck thinker.

The red puppy is no longer available.

The purple puppy has tested with results mainly in the 3's and is showing to be a steady puppy, happy and playful. He comes readily to strangers and plays willingly with a new toy. He has little interest in chasing a ball at this point, that will likely come a bit later. He is best suited as a family dog as he will get along with all members of the family and bond easily. He will likely take discipline well and learn quickly. A steady voice and consistency will be the best training philosophy with this puppy.

The Green Puppy is no longer available.

The puppies will get their first worming this week as well as the first in the series of their puppy vaccinations.

4 weeks old

The boys have recieved their colored collars now. They will wear these from now on and we will refer to them by the color of their collar for identification.

As you can see here, the BLUE collared pup has a slightly smaller facial structure. He is the largest puppy at 9lbs 9oz today. At this time he is the quickest to struggle to get up when put on his back. He tries to get up almost immediately. He is not necessarily the quickest to come forward in the group but he is not shy either. We are watching them to see how their personalities develop. He has a few tan hairs on the underside of his paws.

The GREEN collared pup is the most social at this point. He is the second largest at 9lbs 4oz today He wags his tail all the time. He is the one that always wants to be on your shoe if you are standing or in your lap if you are sitting. We cannot find any tan hairs on this puppy.

The RED collared pup is the one that we originally thought was going to be the most dominant. At 3 weeks old he was the most adventurous and he was always the first to come forward in a group of puppies when we would approach. He is 9lbs 1oz today. At this point, they all seem to be similar in personality. We will have to keep watching. This pup has a tiny amount of light tan or white hair on his chest (like 15 hairs) the head on photos show this and if you click on the photos they will enlarge.

The PURPLE collared puppy weighs 8lbs 13oz . He has a patch of white on his chest. the patch of hair is small and if I had to predict, I would say it will be smaller than a dime when he is mature. The patch is visible in the full frontal photo of the 4 puppies together above.

I have mentioned that some of these puppies have tan hairs on the bottoms of their paws. These photos show what this looks like.

They are starting to eat soft foods in addition to mother's milk and they are in the bigger run now where they can get out of the whelping box and romp and play during the day.

Up and moving around

The boys are up and moving around these days. This morning when we went out to check on them, one had taken the plunge and ventured out and over the side of the whelping box. I guess it is time to close the flap so that mom has to jump up and into the box to get in. Another week and the boys will move to the indoor/outdoor run where they can run and play, for now they stay inside where it is temperature controlled at all times.

It is almost impossible to take a photo of phoenix without her tounge hanging out. She is a very happy dog, contstanty on the move and always looking for something to do. If she isn't nursing the puppies, she is wanting do some work, play a game or pushing up on our hands looking for a ear scratch.

The Boys are 11 days old now. Nobody has opened their eyes yet. They have really bulked up and are getting big. Phoenix got a bath today and really enjoyed herself for about an hour in the backyard, stretchig her legs and playing a game of fetch.

4 BLIND MICE

Starting in the wee hours of the morning, Phoenix began her labor. By 0330 hours, she had 3 healthy puppies delivered and the fourth came about an hour later. All 4 puppies are male and very dark in color. It is hard to tell at this point if any will have tan markings as they can lighten up as they get bigger. Keep checking back for weights and more photos.

Phoenix is due any day now and she hasn't slowed down a bit. she is constantly in the pool and wants to play fetch whenever someone is around to throw her a ball. She his heavy with puppies and is happy and loving as can be.

The internet is a great resource for researching pedigree information. pedigreedatabase.com as well as akc.org are great websites for learning about any dog's lineage and linebreeding. I have posted the photos I could find of the ancestors.
